Alright, Will Ashworth, you win this round! One quarter ago, fellow Investopedia writer Will Ashworth took issue with me seeing limited appreciation potential in Starbucks (Nasdaq:SBUX) and laid out a case that Starbucks was still a good buy. With the stock up about 22% over the last quarter, blowing away other restaurants like McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) and other consumer stocks in general, there's little else for me to do but see where I got Starbucks so wrong and reevaluated where it can go from here.

Another Strong Quarter
Starbucks was a strong story in the fiscal second quarter, and it got stronger still in the third quarter. Revenue rose 13%, with retail revenue up 14% and specialty up 10%. Underpinning sales, Starbucks saw comp-store growth of 8% overall (transactions up 7%, ticket up 1%), with 9% growth in the U.S. and China/Asia Pacific and 2% growth in Europe.

With higher revenue also came better operating leverage. Gross margin improved more than a point from last year, while operating income rose 25%. That, in turn, led a point and a half of operating margin improvement.

    Big earnings movers: Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) is down 12.9% at $18.90 after a decent earnings reports was spoiled by a weak outlook<<LINK>>. Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: UEPS) is up 46.6% at $10.69 after beating estimates on EPS and revenues, raising its outlook for the third quarter, and posting a new 52-week high of $11.20. Aeropostale Inc. (NYSE: ARO) is down 20.2% at $8.76, following a new 52-week low of $8.66, after a big earnings miss.

    Abercrombie's big problem is that it doesn't have a good understanding of the niche middle-class consumer. Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) is among the companies struggling on the low end by having to use big discounts to attract customers because their brand value is lacking. For a while, Aeropostale was able to move enough volume where this wasn't an issue, but it has become a burdensome underperformer since the recession. On the high end, Abercrombie is also struggling because its pricing (and public image) aren't in tune with what customers want despite maintaining good brand value -- not to mention that its push into Europe in the face of austerity measures hasn't been the wisest move. The real winner in teen retail looks like American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO  ) , which is hitting the sweet spot in terms of price while also maintaining a strong branding presence in stores and online.

One notable example we've covered frequently is teen-clothing retailer Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) . When economic times are booming, its inventory moves quickly enough that its deep discounts go unnoticed. The past few years, though, have been difficult, with the company unable to move unwanted merchandise even at steep discounts.

    Records fell on Wall Street Friday as another solid report on housing lifted the market for the second day in a row. There's a three-day weekend coming up -- something that often prompts investor caution -- but the gains were broad-based even though volume was fairly light. The VIX, which measures volatility, fell to its lowest level this year. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 63 points, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 31, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 8, topping the record high set last week. The Dow Transportation average also raced to an all-time high, lifted by airline stocks. United (UAL) soared more than 4 percent; Delta (DAL) gained more than 1 percent and Southwest (LUV) gained 2 percent. Southwest is at an all-time high, up 79 percent from a year ago. New home sales bounced back with a better than expected 6.4 percent increase last month. Lennar (LEN) and D.R. Horton (DHI) both rose 4 percent. Pulte (PHM), Beazer (BZH) and Hovnanian (HOV) also solid posted gains. Earnings continue to drive retail stocks. Gap (GPS) edged higher even though net fell. Foot Locker (FL) gained 1½ percent after topping expectations. GameStop (GME) rose 4 percent. Its net rose, helped by the rollout last year of new Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Zumiez (ZUMZ) rose 5½ percent on an earnings beat. But Aeropostale (ARO) tumbled 24 percent. Its loss widened and sales declined. The retailer continues to struggle with teen fashion trends. Also on the earnings front, TiVo (TIVO) rose 2 percent as it swung to a profit from a year ago loss. It also reported an increase in the number of subscribers. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) rose 6 percent on news the company plans to eliminate up to 16,000 additional workers in an effort to cut costs. And several stocks extended big moves from yesterday.     Heading into last night’s earnings report, O’Reilly had returned 50% this year including reinvested dividends, easily besting peers Autozone (AZO), which had returned 22%, Genuine Parts (GPC), which has returned 26%, and Advance Auto Parts (AAP), which had returned 38%,� thanks in large part to a 25% gain in the last month due to its purchase of General Parts International. Clearly, investors thought O’Reilly had something going for it its competitors did not.
