SAN FRANCISCO -- If the IPOs of Facebook, LinkedIn and similar companies are any guide, retail investors who want to own Twitter shares for the long term might be better off waiting at least a few months to buy them.

That's because those two social networking companies -- as well as other Internet upstarts whose bankers have sold IPOs in the last three years -- saw their shares fall sharply from their first-day closing price in the months after their offerings hit the market.

Retail investors who bought their shares after they'd already risen in their market debuts initially took big hits to their positions.

Those who bought Zynga and Groupon during their first day of public trading were given a permanent beat-down, unfortunately.

(HRTPY.PK) raised $1.5 billion in an IPO to fund a highly touted and highly expensive oil & gas exploration campaign in both the Amazon and offshore Namibia. Management was very promotional and overpromised and underdelivered. The three exploration wells in Namibia were all failures and the Conclusion of Solimoes Gas Monetization Study leads the market (myself included) to conclude that there is little or no present value in the discoveries in the Solimoes basin. The stock has lost 85% in just the last year, and over 97% in the last three years.     What do Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC), Astec Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTE), and First Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:THFF) have in common? Not much, on the surface. In fact, were it not for something very specific to one particular person (me), they'd have nothing in common at all. This week though, THFF, ASTE, and PSEC all have at least one thing in common, and that's the fact that they're all going into my mental/hypothetical portfolio.
