John Mone/APSouthwest Airlines aircraft technicians install newer, skinnier seats on a 737 at the carrier's headquarters in Dallas. It's not your imagination. There really is a tighter squeeze on many planes these days. The big U.S. airlines are taking out old, bulky seats in favor of so-called slimline models that take up less space from front to back, allowing for five or six more seats on each plane. The changes, covering some of the most common planes flown on domestic and international routes, give the airlines two of their favorite things: More paying passengers, and a smaller fuel bill because the seats are slightly lighter. It's part of a trend among the airlines to view seats as money-makers, not just pieces of furniture. Add a few inches of legroom and airlines can charge more for tickets. Take away a few inches and they can fit more seats on the plane. Some passengers seem to mind the tighter squeeze more than others. The new seats generally have thinner padding. And new layouts on some planes have made the aisles slightly narrower, meaning the dreaded beverage cart bump to the shoulder happens more often. And this is all going on in coach at a time when airlines are spending heavily to add better premium seats in the front of the plane. Whether the new seats are really closer together depends on how you measure. By the usual measure, called "pitch," the new ones are generally an inch closer together from front to back as measured at the armrest. Airlines say you won't notice. And the new seats are designed to minimize this problem. The seats going onto Southwest's 737s have thinner seatback magazine pockets. Passengers on Alaska Airlines (ALK) will find slightly smaller tray tables. United's new seats put the magazine pocket above the tray table, getting it away from passengers' knees. And seat-makers saved some space with lighter-weight frames and padding. This allows airlines to claim that passengers have as much above-the-knee "personal sp

    War of words
In the stock market, the old saying that "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me" doesn't hold water. GTx (NASDAQ: GTXI  ) investors experienced that reality firsthand this week, with shares dropping 15% from an online article published on Wednesday.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One biopharmaceutical player that's rapidly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is GTx (GTXI), which is dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecules that selectively target hormone pathways to treat cancer, osteoporosis and bone loss, muscle loss and other serious medical condition. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 53%.

If you look at the chart for GTx, you'll notice that this stock recently gapped down sharply from over $4 to below $1.50 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of GTXI have rebounded sharply and started to uptrend, with the stock moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.96 a share. During that move, shares of GTXI have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GTXI within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GTXI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.35 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GTXI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started just above $4 a share. Some possible upside targets if GTXI gets into that gap with volume are $2.50 to $3 a share, or possibly even $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GTXI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.50 a share. One can also buy GTXI off strength once it takes out $1.96 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

If you were lucky enough to step into Rexahn Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSEMKT:RNN) when your truly suggested it was a budding buy back on December 23rd, then congratulations - you're now up a little more than 60% (assuming you bought into RNN after the break above a key resistance line on the 27th). Now get out. Instead, use your profits from the Rexahn to take on a stake in GTx, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTXI). No, GTXI may not look like much at first, but when you take a step back and look at a chart of GTx, Inc. through a longer-term lens, the upside potential becomes clear.

Craig Warga/Bloomberg via Getty Images U.S. consumers felt less confident about their finances last month, attributable in part to the looming April 15 tax deadline, a new survey finds. The Consumer Bankers Association and AOL (AOL) monthly Finance Optimism Index fell 3.6 points to -6.2, the organizations said Thursday. An index value below zero indicates that greater number of those who responded to the poll felt pessimistic than optimistic about their personal finances. Results of the survey suggest April's impending federal income tax deadline combined with other factors, including sluggish job growth and swiftly rising food prices, meant more Americans overall were feeling their budgets squeezed in March. The CBA and AOL Finance Optimism Index tracks optimism through agreement with four statements in a survey: I am optimistic about my personal financial future. I am worried about my current financial situation. The news I've been hearing in the past few weeks about Americans' personal finances has been generally positive. I am worried that the current economic and political situation is going to affect my personal finances. The poll results were in line with another measure of consumer confidence in the U.S. economy -- the final March survey of consumer sentiment by the University of Michigan, which showed consumers trimming spending as their faith in a growing economy waned. Another measure, however, showed Americans felt more upbeat. The Conference Board last month said its index of consumer attitudes rose to its highest level since January 2008. Still, while the Conference Board survey found consumers were more upbeat about the overall economy and employment prospects, findings suggested that Americans were concerned about their ability to earn more money and rising prices.
